berlin based japanese industrial synth duo group a make their debut on mannequin records with a killer 3-tracks self titled ep. tommi tokyo (synth, drum machine, vocals) and sayaka botanic (violin, tapes and sampler) released 2 studio albums and 1 live album in tokyo, before to move in berlin in 2016. with their mixture of dark minimal synth, avant-noise, striking visuals and performance art, the duo still carries on the very breath of early industrial pioneers such as throbbing gristle, die form, klinik, cabaret voltaire. the ep was recorded in tommi s bedroom and later mixed together with mannequin records head alessandro adriani in his own studio in berlin. the first two tracks of the ep, t.o.p. and ketabali represents the duo personal reaction against the current economy, an up yours to capitalism, news and politics, all permeated by industrial rhytmic-noises and words with no meaning. the b2 alibi instead was inspired by an autobiography of hi-red centre(japanese avant-grade art group in the 60-70 s) written by one of the members, genpei akasegawa. tommi found the word alibi in the book and she just started singing about the group. as she never wrote lyrics for that, during their live performances they are always improvised, so changing and mutating every time.

recorded on september 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with john coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed pharoahs first) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. (yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard pharaoh to the more personalized pharoah.) with one foot in mainstream jazz � pianist jane getz had played with charles mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of sanders� style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on impulse. interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of vant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. esp-disk has issued this album under three different covers, for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, we have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. it is augmented with liner notes by a current esp-disk� artist, tenor saxophonist ras moshe burnett of the red microphone, who can be heard accompanying amina baraka on their eponymous 2017 release.

the great metaphorical river has been lending itself to wise sayings for ages, usually as a manifestation of time, or in relation to how we see instances pass. it exists only as current, neither in the past nor the future, the present. rarely though do we look for guidance from the bodies of water that rest beyond a current�s reach: backwaters seen as stagnant and turbid. that they are, yet by nature they also collect, capable of shaping labyrinthine networks of canals and inlets with ecosystems all their own. backwaters let the present settle into the past, they�re a place apart from the flow where moments compile and mature.
kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between melbourne cousins chloe kaul and simon lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. these were exciting times, the duo�s well worn ep furthered the promise of 2014 ep cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing kllo on festival stages as well as artists-to-watch lists. nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar.

j. f. burma is a new analog synth project of jeremy berman, a longtime friend of the bunker who we met via the forums of i-f�s cybernetic broadcasting system internet radio station in the early 2000�s. while living in brooklyn, jeremy spent many hours each week searching for undiscovered gems among the piles of records (and sometimes rat skeletons) at notorious greenpoint crate-digging spot the thing. inspired and educated by the music he was finding, he purchased his first modular and started building synthesizers and modules in spite of his lack of training in electrical engineering. currently, about half of his current eurorack rig has been diy�ed via trial and error.

eris harmonia is the new ep from acclaimed dublin-via-berlin duo lakker. it is an investigation of disparate styles and sounds reflecting different reactions and emotional responses to the current world climate of chaos and uncertainty. after finishing struggle & emerge lakker retreated to the studio to find fresh inspiration. in their words: we talked of needing a black space or empty white page in which to experiment with sound, genre and structure freely, without expectation and without time constraints or release deadlines.

going one above todays current wild wild west landscape of digital sampling and officially licensing a legendary 60s-era song thats made its rounds in the golden era of sample based hip-hop. akshin alizadeh, the man from azerbaijan, is the lucky one tapped from the label�s roster to remix marlena shaws woman of the ghetto. the producers strong funk and nu-jazz influences, as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats, are on full display once again. rightfully dramatic orchestral strings give way to bluesy rhythmic wah-wah guitar plucking, slightly cabaret-ish piano, pitch bending keys, and a totally sultry sax. the percussion sounds like signature alizadeh with a flickering hat pattern, well placed snare rolls, and punchy interplay with the kick. for the djs needing to spice things up, an instrumental is included.

austin-based musician eliot lipp delivers �skywave�, an album lipp has been working on for the past several months. with influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. in these nine songs lipp feels he �might have everything i want to say in one moment.� recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. with a versatile approach, lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across america and abroad always returning to his hometown in the pacific northwest. collaboration plays a role in all his albums. he�s been a fan of emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his �not quite awake� remix. he asked dmc champ chris karns to scratch on �joyride�. in addition to doing cuts, chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. �reflection� came from a jam session with gibbz and cherub in their nashville studio. one of lipp�s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from seattle that call themselves fish tank friends. most of them had a hand in the early stages of �spiders�. with monthly trips planned from texas back to washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

elliot adamson knows how good he is, which is equally as daunting as it is impressive. i�ve known him since he was the eager beaver barman at a place i�d play regularly in my hometown, who used to try and stick his demos under my nose, and now he seems poised for world domination with a who s who of the worlds biggest djs singing his praises. i�m so pleased i listened to those demos when i did. elliot has a startling breadth and depth of taste for someone of such tender years (although to be honest, people only mention other peoples youth when they feel like they�re getting old themselves). the ep elliot has provided for me me me covers a range of vibes which can be traced through mid 90s house, millennial techno and that current and contemporary feel that we�re all still struggling to name adequately. elliot is a real talent and i couldn�t be happier to provide a platform for what i feel is his most esoteric work to date, and a worthy showcase of his real capabilities.
